Paper Bag
Paper bags offer a significant advantage in terms of their biodegradability and recyclability, unlike plastic bags, which have a larger environmental impact. In Europe, the fibers in paper bags are typically reused an average of 3.6 times, compared to the global average of 2.4 times. However, plastic or water-resistant coatings or layers on bags can complicate the recycling process.

What is Paper Bag?
A paper bag is a bag made of paper, usually kraft paper. Paper bags can be made either with virgin or recycled fibres to meet customers' demands. Paper bags are commonly used as shopping carrier bags and for packaging of some consumer goods. They carry a wide range of products from groceries, glass bottles, clothing, books, toiletries, electronics and various other goods and can also function as means of transport in day-to-day activities.
Advantages of Paper Bag
1. Environmentally Friendly
Paper bags are crucial in our effort to make the world more environmentally friendly. They are regarded as environmentally friendly for the following reasons:
Paper bags are created from trees, a renewable resource, which are used in the production of paper. Paper bags are a sustainable solution because trees can be replanted.
Biodegradable: Paper bags decompose far more quickly than plastic bags. They can naturally degrade without leaving behind any damaging residues, lessening their impact on the environment
Lessening of Plastic Pollution: Plastic pollution has grown to be a serious environmental issue. We can drastically minimise the quantity of plastic garbage that ends up in our oceans and landfills by switching to paper bags instead of plastic ones.
2. Versatility
Paper bags are useful for a wide range of tasks since they are available in a variety of sizes and shapes. Why they are so adaptable is as follows:
Paper bags are frequently used to transport groceries when doing grocery shopping. They are roomy and can fit groceries including fruits, vegetables, canned foods, and other stuff.
Paper bags are the ideal container for carrying books and magazines. Their robust design aids in preventing damage to the contents.
Paper bags can be stylishly embellished and used as gift bags. They can be altered to fit the situation and offer a bit of flair.
Clothes and Accessories: Paper bags offer a practical and fashionable method to transport your items while you buy clothing, shoes, or accessories.
3. Strength and Durability
Contrary to what most people think, paper bags are remarkably robust and long-lasting. Why they can meet your carrying needs is as follows:
Robust Design: Many paper bags now come with reinforced handles and bottoms, which further increases their sturdiness. These improvements guarantee that the bags can support the weight of the contents and survive tearing.
Resistance to Wear and Tear: When made appropriately, paper bags can survive normal wear and tear. Their strength is greatly influenced by the type of paper used in the manufacture and the procedure.
Safe Handling: Paper bags’ durable design makes sure that your items are kept safe during transit. Usually strengthened, the handles can support the weight without fracturing.
4. Customizability
The flexibility to customise paper bags is one of its main benefits. They are ideal for letting your imagination flow because of the following:
Paper bags provide a blank canvas on which creativity can be expressed. Paper bags offer countless design options, whether you want to customise a present bag or make something special.
Decorative Options: You may create works of art out of paper bags by using a range of decorative elements. Explore your possibilities with paints, markers, stickers, stamps, glitter, and more.
Personalised Gifts: You may use decorated paper bags as personalised gift bags to give your presents a more personal touch.
5. Recyclability
Recycling is a crucial component of living sustainably, and paper bags are very recyclable. Here are several reasons recycling paper bags is crucial:
Recycling paper bags contributes to energy conservation. When compared to making new paper products from scratch, recycling uses less energy.
Less rubbish Landfilled: By recycling paper bags, we cut down on the rubbish that is disposed of in landfills. This lessens the harmful effects of landfills on the environment.
Resource conservation: Recycling paper bags lowers the demand for raw materials like trees. The sustainability of our world over the long run depends on this resource conservation.

What is Paper Bag Made of?
Paper bags typically consist of kraft paper, providing that familiar brown hue we all recognize. However, what’s fascinating is that any paper and colour can be utilised to craft tote-style paper bags, adding versatility to their usage. Personally, I find the natural aesthetic of kraft paper appealing, knowing it’s often sourced sustainably.
Paper pulp, crushed into flat sheets or rolls of paper, is used to make paper bags. These paper rolls are cut to size, which entails cutting them twice as tall as the completed bag must be. These cut sheets’ two parallel open sides are then folded and joined by adhesive. This can be done by heating and pushing the glue’s surfaces together.
But depending on the bag’s purpose, several patterns and styles are created for various paper types. Although Kraft paper is typically used to make brown bags, any paper and colour can be used. Laminated paper may also be used to create kraft bags. This includes a plastic coating inside to protect against moisture from the items within or to keep moisture out. Additionally, Kraft paper may be created in any colour and weight for use in manufacturing bags. These typically come in a wide range of sizes and are constructed of 60gsm paper.

How To Make Paper Bags
Determine the Size
Choose the paper bag’s desired size before anything else. To measure and mark the dimensions on the piece of paper, use a ruler. Starting with a larger size is always preferable, and trimming it down as necessary.
Folding the Paper
The paper should be properly folded in half lengthwise with the edges aligned. To make sure the fold stays put, crease it firmly.
Make the Bottom
Make two parallel cuts from the folded edge to the open edge of the paper while it is still folded, leaving a 1-2 inch gap at the bottom. The flaps that make up the bag’s bottom will be formed by these cuts.
Opening and Flattening
Open the paper gently, preserving the bottom part. The sheet will become long and rectangular with a slit in the centre when you flatten it.
Fold the Base
To make a flat base for the bag, fold the bottom section of the paper along the slits. To hold the folds in place and strengthen the bottom, use glue or tape.
Side Folds
The paper is folded in half, with the left and right sides of the fold slightly overlapping. The sides of the bag will be formed by this. Ensure that the margins are nicely aligned.
Tighten the Corners
To firmly hold the sides in place, run glue or tape along the edges where they overlap. To ensure a strong binding, press firmly.
Handles
Cut two long strips from the extra paper that is on top of the bag to use as handles. Utilise tape or adhesive to affix them to the bag’s interior. Make sure the handles can support the weight of the bag and are firmly fastened.

Six Things You Need to Consider When Choosing a Paper Bag
Is the paper bag food safe?
With health and hygiene more of a priority than ever, you should ensure that all of your packaging products are food safe, including bags used to hold or transport food. Ask suppliers if their paper bags are manufactured in food grade environments.
Does the bag have the right strength profile for your needs?
With more strength than you can handle, paper bags are often stronger than their plastic equivalents, when made with quality and sustainable raw material. Ensure you have asked your supplier about the strength profile of the bag you are considering, or even test it yourself!
Are paper bags fridge friendly?
Not all paper bags are made equal and the material doesn’t traditionally lend itself to cold or damp environments. If you are looking to use paper bags for chilled goods, make sure they won’t fail on your customers.
Does your bag promote to food integrity?
The permeability of a paper bag allows steam to escape, where it won’t in a plastic bag. This is why chips or fried foods transported in a plastic bag tend to go soggy. Steam can’t escape as effectively in a plastic bag, and therefore condenses on the inside on the bag. Water molecules are then reabsorbed which softens the texture of the chips or fried foods, and because water absorbs heat energy, the food will also cool down faster.
Do you know who is making your paper bag?
As a manufacturer – we take pride in providing quality paper bags to the FMCG and foodservice industry.
Is this bag sustainable?
Paper bags are made from a renewable resource, and have multiple end of life options. Strong enough to be reused by consumers on multiple occasions, paper bags provide flexibility in their uses. Able to be reused, recycled or composted, making the move to a paper bag is a truly sustainable option.
6 Types of Paper Used for Making Paper Bags
1. Kraft paper
Kraft paper is a commonly used type of paper for paper bags. This material is made of softwood sulphate, a thick light-brown, yellowish-brown, white or cream paper-making material with a weight of between 80 and 120 grams. The tensile force of kraft paper is high. It comes in variations of no-grain, single or double light, or stripes. It’s used to primarily package envelope bags, portfolios, medical records bags, and so forth. It’s also ideal for packaging food takeaway.
2. White cardboard
This material features a combination of a single layer or multi layers comprised of fully sized, bleached chemical pulp. Its texture is firm while the surface is smooth. Among the various paper bag-making materials in the market, imported white cardboard is more widely used. If you’re looking for top-of-the-range gift boxes or bags, they will most likely feature imported white cardboard. These make for very appropriate giveaways or promotional items for clients who expect a slightly higher quality.
3. Coated paper
This material is ideal for making cartons, labels, cigarette cases and other types of packaging. Paint and copper plate base paper are the main materials used. Auxiliary materials, adhesives, and pigments are converted into coatings to cover the paperboard’s surface using special equipment. They are then dried and calendered, leaving behind a clean, smooth surface that makes for a superior printing performance. The grammage (paper thickness or weight) is between 70 and 250 grams.
4. Offset paper
The surface of this paper bag-making material is smooth and white, although the coated paper is smoother, whiter and tighter. If you’re looking to print multi-coloured or monochromatic texts, maps, book covers, colour trademarks, pictorials, posters, or inserts, this paper material fits the bill. Its branding potential means it can be customized to reflect the good image of your company.
5. Recycled or eco-friendly paper
This material is made from waste paper or biodegradable waste from certain manufacturing processes. Instead of throwing paper waste away, it’s recycled and manufactured into paper products. It’s highly recommended for most types of paper bags since it is eco-friendly. Sugarcane bagasse, the pulp waste left after extracting sugar from sugarcane, is another environmentally friendly paper-making material. It’s highly recommended for the manufacturing of wraps, covers, bags, tubes, and stretch film. The fact that this material biodegrades extremely fast is another reason you might want to consider paper bags made from it.
6. Newsprint paper
Although primarily used to print newspapers, newsprint also makes beautiful paper bags that clients love. While the quality of this material is not as high as others since the paper doesn’t have to be white, it can be repurposed to make attractive and artistic paper bags that people absolutely love. Besides, although it’s usually not coloured, you can apply colour to it through mass-dying.
